Steven Wells (1960–24 June 2009) was one of the most provocative writers of his time. I will personally remember him best when he wrote for the NME. I was always thrilled to the bone by his writing. I prayed that some magic pixie would one day visit me and sprinkle me with witty dust so I might end up with a small smidgen of his talent.
I was lucky enough to meet him as a teenager at the NME, and he was very kind to me, and was instrumental in teaching me that good music was about a good tune and not about how “cool” the band is. Indeed, the man gave me a Spice Girls CD with good comments about it.
I will forever remember him.

Though we wrote to each other for many years, I only ever met Swells once — in an NME tent with Daphne and Celeste!
Miss him already.
